Description
Free dispersed camping on about 21 miles of primitive beach, from Cape Point to Ophelia Inlet (Great Island area). Island accessible only by private vehicle ferry from Davis, NC (advance reservation required, fee based on vehicle size). Beach driving permit (ORV) required, approximately $35-75 US/year depending on the season, to be purchased on recreation.gov before arrival — camping itself is free, no separate camping permit required. Stay on the ocean side of the beach, beyond the primary dunes. No services (water, trash) on the island — everything must be taken back with you. Maximum stay of 14 consecutive days.
