Camping at Escalante Petrified Forest State Park, in Escalante, southern Utah, overlooking the Wide Hollow Reservoir (130 acres) at about 5,900 feet elevation. The campground has 22 sites, including 6 with electricity, accommodating tents, trailers, and RVs from 18 to 40 feet. On-site: drinking water, restroom facilities with showers and flush toilets, a dump station, tables, fire rings, grills, and shade shelters; a visitor center features exhibits on the petrified forest. The park offers trails through the petrified wood (photography only, collecting prohibited), swimming, kayak and paddleboard rentals, and fishing at the reservoir. Open year-round (poor cell coverage in the area); reservations recommended.
