Free dispersed camping (boondocking) at the Factory Butte Recreation Area, a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) site located about 12 miles west of Hanksville, Utah, on Highway 24. The site offers spectacular lunar-like desert landscapes (badlands, buttes, and cliffs), highly sought after by photographers, with several flat and level areas for parking a recreational vehicle. This is primarily an off-highway vehicle (OHV) area: motorized users must stay within designated open areas and on authorized roads. No services on site (no water, no dumping; restrooms only at the visitor kiosk of the area): full self-sufficiency required. Access via dirt roads — caution in wet weather, as the clay becomes impassable. No fees or reservations, first come first served.
