Ce parc protège l'un des réseaux de grottes les plus longs et complexes au monde, réputé pour ses rares formations en « boxwork », ainsi qu'une prairie en surface où broutent bisons et pronghorns. Le centre d'accueil se trouve à environ 16 km au nord de la ville de Hot Springs, dans les Black Hills du Dakota du Sud. Le camping Elk Mountain, à deux pas du centre d'accueil, est ouvert à l'année.
