🏛️ Municipal Regulations — RV Parking in Banff
Verified on 16/08/2026
« Camping » — defined by bylaw as sleeping outdoors, in a vehicle, tent, or trailer between 9pm and 9am — is explicitly banned at all times on every street and public place in Banff, with a $200 fine (Bylaw 124-1, sec. 2.1(f) and 6.1(h)). The ban also extends to any private property, residential or commercial, including business parking lots, under a separate bylaw ($100 to $2,500 fine). A general traffic bylaw further caps all street parking at 72 consecutive hours and lets the Town create permit-based overnight parking programs, but doesn't itself ban camping. A unique fact in Canada: Banff is the only incorporated municipality inside a national park (Banff National Park, a special status since 1990), with its own elected council that adopts these bylaws under Alberta law — Parks Canada wardens can enforce them as peace officers, but they remain municipal bylaws, not federal ones. Exploring the Rockies by RV always starts with a glance at the rules for wherever you plan to spend the night. (Source: Town of Banff, Bylaw 124-1 « Street and Public Place Use Bylaw »)
