Description

The South Bootlegger Recreation Area is a public and rustic campground managed by the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) of the United States. Located at about 3,000 feet elevation on the south shore of Lake Elwell (Tiber Reservoir) in north-central Montana, it is approximately 20 miles southwest of Chester. This wild site is popular among boating and sport fishing enthusiasts.

The campground offers spacious sites for tents and recreational vehicles, each equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. Access is free, with no reservations required, and sites are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum stay duration is 14 consecutive days, and the site is accessible year-round.

Regarding amenities, there are no individual hookups (water, electricity, sewer), and campers must be fully self-sufficient. Potable water is available at a common supply point, and there are accessible vault toilets, but there are no showers.

Activities include a boat launch ramp and a floating dock during the summer, as well as excellent fishing, particularly for yellow perch, trout, and northern pike. The surrounding cliffs and hills are suitable for mountain biking, swimming, and wildlife observation.

Respect the area and nature, leave no trace behind, and remain quiet.
